    Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let you know that Stephen
Thep, Lay Minister of St. John's Lutheran Church, Sudanese Ministry, Salt
Lake City died in the Lord in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday, March 22, 2009.
Stephen arrived in Nairobi on March 19, 2009 to reunite with his wife, his
brother Michael, and his brother's family and to prepare the way for a
mission plant in Akobo, South Sudan.

We have few details of his death except that he was at his brother's home
preparing to go to bed when he was taken ill. He was rushed to Nairobi
Hospital where he was pronounced dead. We don't have any other information
about his death or possible arrangements.

Please keep Stephen's family and the Sudanese community in Salt Lake in your

Below is the message from the people in Nairobi telling us about the cause of the death of Stephen Gatkek Thep. These people are the representatives from Lutheran Church in Nairobi, Kenya. I will update everybody for the preparation of Stephen's body to be taken to Akobo for burial as soon as I receive more details.

Thank you very much to all of you for the kinds words in a very difficult time of mourning the death of our dear brother.

Hi, Susan. Catherine and I are back from the Sudan Ambassador's house. He
talked with us a bit, but most of the time we just sat with all the women
gathered there for what we hoped was an appropriate amount of time. I asked
him what had happened, and he said that Stephen seemed fine since he got
here. After supper on Sunday evening, Stephen sat and talked with people
until late. Then he moved to another room and fell over unconscious. He
was dead by the time they got to the hospital. An autopsy yesterday
revealed that apparently food got into his windpipe and stopped the flow of
air. I guess that can happen, but it seems odd that no one said he was
coughing or choking. When we were at the Ambassador's house, we were told
Stephen's wife and someone else had gone to the US Embassy to do the paper
work to get the body released. They were expecting a death certificate
today and hope to fly the body back to Akobo on Friday. I talked with
Claude last night, and he said he would tell someone with ELCS to go there,
and now we have an approximate date. I think the Ambassador is moving
    things along pretty well.

Again, our sympathies for all that has happened. Please greet Wiyual and
the other church people there. Tell them we greeted the family and told
them we were from the same church that Stephen belonged to in America, that
we were sisters and brothers in Christ.

    God bless you!

It is with a heavy heart that we report on the death of Stephen Gatkek Thep, our active brother and member of our great Community. We are all praying for Stephen’s family, and his extended family, as we cope with the loss of someone so special. This is long overdue, it was hard for me to accept that our brother no longer walks with us anymore. Perhaps he is above us all looking down, or perhaps his soul still is here on earth touching the hearts of those in need. He was always, always looking out for everyone around him. He always had a smile even through injury and hard aches. He always spoke kindly even to those whom no one liked. He was always wishful in his endeavors and no one could ever break him down. It’s a sad loss, but to see the love that came from his life makes us realize how much his presence… even the short time he was here… was a gift to all of us. God Blessed all of you who were touched by him, may his touch on your heart maintain its vigor as though he were still here touching your heart every moment. To all his friends, you may have been blessed by him but he was also blessed to be with you. Remember that his best times were shaped by those around him, that his rough times passed with those around him, and that his memory rests in all those who were around him. May he rest in peace, and may his resting never let us forget.

I know this year seems to be against our lives, we the Lou Nuer people. We don’t have anything to do rather than praying our Almighty God to balance the temperature of upcoming months with our lives. I don’t have much to say about our brother, Stephen Gatkek Thep who passed away because my words will not do that much. May the Almighty God rest his soul in peace.

What we need to do right now as a community is to encourage his family to stay calm wherever they reside. I also ask your considerations to contribute $30. 00 per a person for Stephen Gatkek Thep’s memorial service, please. If there is somebody who is much closer to him, give us your account number, please. I know $ 30.00 will not do anything, but let’s do it for his lovely family as our remembrances to Stephen Gatkek Thep for everything he had done on earth with us.

    Let’s do it brothers/sisters.

    God bless you all
